Dept. Meeting Minutes, 1-28-10

Department — KVH @ 11:58 am, Monday, February 1st, 2010

Printmaking Department Meeting Minutes – January 28, 2010.

We had what was probably our largest and most information-packed meeting ever.

-Reminder as always to sign up for our mailing list (the link is to the right on this page) and bookmark our department site (this one) for regular updates. [I also just implemented an RSS feed for it.].

-Reminder to Seniors of the mandatory Graduation meeting TODAY (Feb 1) at 3 or 5 PM! Falvey Hall. Be there.

– School-Wide Competitive Scholarships are DUE TODAY (Feb 1) by 4 PM. Applications are submitted electronically. Here is the link. Gail, Quentin, and Nick are Jurying for the Printmaking Dept.

-Those long-past due CDs of everyone’s images are … long past due.  Get them in to Kyle! (Reminder -we want 10 good, display-quality images from every major and concentrator. This will be a yearly request from everyone.)

-Mt. Royal Medical at 1501 Mt. Royal will be offering a separate suite and extended hours exclusively for MICA students on or around March 1. Extended hours will be listed here as they are made available.

-Katie Hale reported back from SVA:

  • Students would like more accurate Course Descriptions.
  • Building hours are frequently brought up at SVA.
  • The debate over Course Syllabi being posted online is being discussed
  • Katie Hale welcomes your comments on the Department and Dolphin, Good + Bad, khale@mica.edu

-Carrie Tuccio is helping to organize the student table at the BMA Print Fair.

  • Most slots are full but e-mail Carrie if you are interested (Juniors / Seniors only, Majors and Concentrators only). There is an entry fee. The fair is March 26-28.

OK –  The meaty meeting stuff:

-The Department Exhibition will hang the week March 29th. We haven’t figured out details yet but rest assured I’ll make them available as the date approaches.

-Jose Roca, Coordinator for Philagrafika, will be lecturing (Open to all) and Critiquing (Printmaking ONLY!) at MICA in 9 days.

He lectures at 12:30 PM on February 10th in Brown 320. This is a mandatory lecture for all Printmaking students. Tell your other faculty you will be late returning from lunch. Do not miss this.

He will be critiquing a handful of Printmaking Majors, but the critiques are open to sit in on. Jose Roca is currently blogging for Philagrafika: , which opened this past weekend!

is a huge, 3 month long, city wide celebration and exhibition in Philadelphia, regarding all things print.

It began this past weekend and extends through May. According to the Calendar there are over 65 OFFICIAL events still scheduled through Philagrafika. This is in addition what are probably hundreds of satellite exhibitions and events coinciding with it. This thing is VAST.

-Southern Graphics Conference
, Mark Remarque,is meeting in Philadelphia this year, is March 24-27th, coinciding with a huge number of Philagrafika openings and events. Perhaps most interesting for students (that’s you!) is the Portfolio Presentation opportunities.

This requires membership to take part in, but membership will cover NEXT YEAR’S CONFERENCE as well. If you are serious about a career in printmaking this is DEFINITELY something you should participate in.
Finally in the meeting – Current and upcoming exhibitions:

Nick recommends the Urs Fischer exhibition in NYC.

He co-curated an exhibition at Gallery Four opening next Friday (Feb 12) called Terms of Use, with our very own Colin Benjamin.

Gail is in an exhibition called Imprint/Impact at the Hicks Gallery opening this week, which has had a lot of press coverage already.

Kyle Van Horn and some guy named GAIA, along with many other, much more fabulous people, are in a group exhibition curated by the fine folks at Printeresting called Copy Jam which opens (and closes!!) on Thursday March 25th at the esteemed Art in the Age gallery in Philly.

That’s it. Remember to sign up for our mailing list. It’s a busy semester and we want you to come along for the ride. Questions, don’t hesitate to email kyle: kvanhorn@mica.edu.
