Lecture at Folger Shakespeare Library

Department — faculty @ 10:33 am, Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

GBW Potomac Chapter Announces a Lecture and Workshop, October 29th and 30th, at the Folger Shakespeare Library, presented by Jacques Brejoux and Nadine Dumain

Lecture, Friday October 29th: Medieval stampers: construction and use in pulp preparation for hand papermaking. After more than 30 years exploring the craft of papermaking, Jacques Brejoux came to the conclusion that further improvement of his papers depended on building a full scale set of medieval stampers for preparation of his pulps.  Years of work and 30,000 Euros later, Mr. Brejoux has realized his goal and the accomplishment is one of the most significant events in contemporary hand papermaking.  In this lecture he will describe the entire project and the unusual papers that have resulted—a majority of which are designed for use in book and paper conservation.  The lecture will be preceded by a wine and cheese reception.  A $5 donation will be requested from attendees to help cover the cost of the event.

One day workshop, Saturday October 30th: Paper cased book structures employing multi-ply papers taught by Nadine Dumain.  Nadine Dumain’s workshop will explore the special working properties of new multi-ply paper case papers produced at the Moulin du Verger papermill in France.  Many of the features of the book structures described result from several collaborative workshop sessions and ongoing dialogue with British book conservator Chris Clarkson and master papermaker Jacques Brejoux.  All participants will complete at least one book by the end of the day.

Cost of the workshop:  $125 for GBW members, $150 for non-members.  There will be a $30 materials fee paid directly to the instructor.  Please RSVP to Vicki Lee at vickil@mdsa.net.  Space in the class is not guaranteed until payment is received.

Inside the Crane Stationery facility

Department — KVH @ 4:08 pm, Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

UPDATED: Check out Parts 3 and 4 below!

This is cool.

Nole from Oh So Beautiful Paper in DC was invited to tour Crane & Co Stationery in Massachusetts. I’m torn on what it should be called. It’s more than a print shop and not quite a factory. Calling it a complex or plant seems wrong too.

Regardless, it is large, all encompassing facility that has letterpress printing, custom engraving, foil stamping, embossing, debossing; they can do it all. Need something custom? No problem. Need something produced on a commercial scale? They have you covered too.

Here a craftsman masks off exposed plate area before biting the designs in Ferric Chloride (exactly the process we’re using here).

How’s this for a monstrous engraving press. Pretty awesome…

I don’t want to step on Nole’s toes at all. Go check out the posts for yourself, there is a lot to see.

Part 1Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4 (complete with lovely Shadow Watermarks and a mini Hollander Beater! Nice!!!)

Cheers!
