»MICA's Undergrad Printmaking Dept's day-to-day…

Congrats to Kim Michalak

Department — KVH @ 4:28 pm, Monday, February 28th, 2011

A big huge congratulations to Kim Michalak, a Senior Major, who was accepted last week into the Printer Training program at the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, NM.

The  Tamarind Institute has a long history of training printers for teaching and collaboration. It is a highly competitive and intensive program, accepting only 8 students per year. She joins the ranks of at least four recent alumnae accepted into their program.

Congratulations Kim! We are all very proud of you!

Shelley Langdale lecture, Thursday Feb. 17

Department — KVH @ 3:07 pm, Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Shelley Langdale, the Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, will be giving a presentation on the history of Screenprinting this coming Thursday, Feb 17th, at Noon.

From her description:

Silkscreen printing was a dominant medium in American and British “Pop Art” of the 1960s and is currently enjoying a wide range of applications in contemporary art today.  Less well known is the history of the artistic screen print from its birth in the federally funded print and poster workshops of the Works Progress Administration of 1930s through the Abstract Expressionist-dominated 1950s. This lecture will provide an overview of that development from its “popular” commercial origins in the mass-production techniques of the early decades of the 1900s, through its depression-era struggle for artistic legitimacy and continued associations with commerce, to the coming of age of artistic screenprint production in the Pop Art ‘60s and absorption into the multi-media orientation of printmaking today.

This will be an outstanding lecture. Pack your lunch, get out of class early, return late, whatever you need to do. Don’t miss it!

Open Paper Studio

Department — papermaking @ 1:53 pm, Friday, February 4th, 2011

This semester’s Open Paper Studio will begin on Sunday, February 6th.  The hours are the same as last semester, 10am-3pm.

Remember, only those students who have taken the paper-making class or those that have spoken with Gail for permission may work during open studio.  For those who plan to attend, please contact Rachel Christensen (rchristensen@mica.edu) at least one week before you plan to attend open studio to coordinate and prepare the fiber that you will be working with.

Also, a reminder from last semester:
There is a new policy in effect (and a wonderful opportunity):  just a $20 lab fee for those students interested in working in the studio and using the available supplies (within reason) throughout the ENTIRE semester.  Otherwise you may be asked to purchase your own materials for an individual project.

Remember, there are several classes using the paper studio throughout the semester, so it is extremely important that studio use is coordinated to avoid conflicts and catastrophes.  Again, email Rachel in advance!!

Hope to see you in the studio!
