Spring Dept. Meeting

Department — KVH @ 10:26 am, Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

Hello all!

There is a Department Meeting (all Majors, all Concentrators) this coming Tuesday March 6th.

We will be discussing the state of the shop, the latest changes and additions (there are many), upcoming events (Spring Break, SGC, the BMA Contemporary Print Fair, etc) and things you should already be planning for (summer internships, study abroad, etc).

The meeting will be held in the Litho Studio, Tuesday March 6th at 3:15.

Please be punctual. We will, of course, finish in time for 4 PM classes.

A new press!

cool,Department,Facilities — KVH @ 2:45 pm, Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

This is the week that just keeps on giving…

This past Friday, Jonathan Thomas, Colin Benjamin, Kyle Van Horn, and Lou Joseph (from Exhibitions) piled into the Exhibitions box-truck and a pickup, and drove down to Annapolis. The destination was a little upstairs studio in a beautiful bay-side cottage. The estate of Elizabeth Gaither Ochs and William VanDyke Ochs Jr. were giving MICA a gift.

Today it was reassembled in the Etching Studio. The gift is a beautiful 20×40″ Charles Brand Etching Press.

The press is in gorgeous condition, and was purchased new in 1981 by the Ochs. Charles Brand made name plaques for all newly purchased presses when they sent them out. Here is this press’ plaque:

E. Gaither Ochs, Printmaker, October 1981.

This press will be 31 in the fall.

Extra special thanks to Betty Ochs for taking such excellent care of her press for so long, to her daughter Ridgely Ochs, for so generously donating it in her parents’ name, and to Candice Bigalow for helping to coordinate the pickup.

And with that, the press is 100% up and running! Please use it! (As if you needed us to tell you to…)

New washout sink in silkscreen!

Facilities — KVH @ 10:47 am, Monday, February 27th, 2012

Well, we though it would never happen, but it finally arrived and was installed.

The new Hydrobooth washout sink in the silkscreen washout room is up and running! We’re still waiting on having the new ventilation connected, but we’re happy to say it’s ready to use.

A few new features to look out for:

-All spray and haze-remover bottles now hang inside the washout sink. Please be diligent about keeping them clean as you use them.

There’s a new pressure-washer gun holster, just like before. The gun is a little shorter than it used to be, but it works exactly the same way.

And the other new addition, a curtain. Since the pressure washer has changed directions in the washout room (90-degree turn to the left) it now sprays back into the adjoining screen-drying space. Please be conscious of how much water is spraying out of the sink, and please be diligent about keeping the curtain closed when you’re washing and reclaiming screens.

The booth lights (and future ventilation) is controlled right on the booth. When the ventilation is up and running, it will exhaust straight out of the booth, not from across the room.

So that’s it. Enjoy it while it’s still spotless, and please do what you can to keep it clean for as long as possible.

Spring 2012 Open Paper Studio

Department — printmaking @ 4:23 pm, Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

THIS  MONDAY  FEB. 6, INFORMATION LECTURE Fabriano, Italy Paper/Print/Book Intensive 2012 in Fox 418 at 12:00.

Pyramid Atlantic Art Center again sponsors “Paper, Print and Book” led by artist Lynn Sures in conjunction with Giorgio Pellegrini of the Museum of Paper and Watermark, Fabriano, Italy. The course will offer students two weeks of intensive study at the Museum with time to enjoy the beautiful Marche region. Find out all the details on Monday and bring your lunch.

This semester’s Open Paper Studio will begin on Sunday, February 5th.  The hours have changed this semester, and will now be from 2pm-7pm.

Remember, only those students who have taken the paper-making class or those that have spoken with Gail for permission may work during open studio.  For those who plan to attend, please contact Eleni Giorgos (egiorgos@mica.edu) at least one week before you plan to attend open studio to coordinate and prepare the fiber that you will be working with. There will be no beater operation during open studio time.

Please remember that there is a $20 lab fee for those students interested in working in the studio and using the available supplies (within reason) throughout the ENTIRE semester.  Otherwise you may be asked to purchase your own materials for an individual project. This money must be given to Eleni before you can begin working in the studio.

Here’s a fun watermark of Hermes. Hope to see you making equally awesome paper in the studio!

The group will travel to the ICA, view the exhibition and attend an artist talk.

and on the same day…

Theaster Gates is speaking at MICA!

His lecture, entitled My Labor is My Protest / Artist Agency in the Re-Creation of Space, will explore his work in “cultural development”-the arts-based revitalization of under-resourced neighborhoods. Gates uses sculpture, performance art, installations and urban interventions to explore ways in which artists and cultural producers can be proactively involved in community renewal, particularly in poor, black, urban neighborhoods.

Wed. Feb. 8 at 7pm in Falvey Hall
