Department Meeting, Thur. Oct. 18!

Department — KVH @ 9:43 am, Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

Hear ye, hear ye!

There is an all-department meeting THIS THURSDAY!

We are planning a Printmaking Department trip to the IFPDA Print Fair next month, Friday Nov. 2nd, and it’s coming up fast!

We’re finalizing trip and travel details, and seating will be limited. Anyone who is interested in joining us on this trip should ABSOLUTELY attend this meeting. This trip is always fun, and everyone has a great time on this trip.

This trip will also allow attendees to visit the Editions and Artist Books Fair. For details on either, click: IFPDA Print Fair, E/AB Fair.

The department meeting is THURSDAY, Oct. 18th at 3:15 PM.

Don’t be late!

Department — KVH @ 2:00 pm, Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

Fall break begins this coming Friday! Sweet!

The shop will be open over fall break, and so if you’re planning on sticking around to catch up on work, you are absolutely able to! We will have slightly limited hours, 7 AM – 11 PM, so plan accordingly.

If you are planning on working, please keep in mind that we may be slightly shorthanded on workstudy, and you should be extra diligent about cleaning up after yourself and conserving materials whenever possible (rags, solvents, etc – but you do that anyway, don’t you??).

If you’re LEAVING for fall break, or perhaps just sleeping in and enjoying time away from the shop, GREAT! Enjoy your break. We’ll see you on Wednesday!

Also, pencil in on your calendar – Dept Meeting the Thursday AFTER Fall Break. Details to come!

Visiting Artist Bill Fick!

Department — KVH @ 2:56 pm, Monday, October 1st, 2012

Printmaker, lino-carver extraordinaire, and all-around great guy Bill Fick will be in Baltimore this week, and visiting the Printmaking Dept this coming THURSDAY, October 4th.

Bill Fick’s work centers around grotesque heads of mummies, rats smoking cigars, demons, and skulls, all meticulously carved on a larger-than-life scale. His drawings are intricate, and his work is unmistakable.

This Thursday he’ll be giving an artist talk at 12:30 PM in the Etching/Relief Studio, D101, followed immediately by a printing demo using his blocks. The demo is hands-on for all participants, and students are encouraged to bring a blank t-shirt to print ONTO (you read that correctly!). He’s done this before with the MICA Printmaking Dept, and it is a lot of fun. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

Here is a fun video illustrating his printing process, start to finish:

And THEN – if that wasn’t enough for you, Bill Fick is the guest of honor at Litho Shop on Friday evening. Litho Shop is an fine-arts print shop specializing in artist editions located in Hampden, and owned and operated by friend of the department Brian Garner.

You can get to Litho Shop via the Light Rail. Get off at the Woodberry Stop, and then walk through Clipper Mill to Parkdale Ave. Litho Shop is in the large mill on the corner of Clipper Park Rd. and Parkdale Av. and is accessible via the steep sloped driveway to the left of the building. More details will be available here and here.
