Julia Petrino and Kim Michalak have foolishly awesomely decided to head up this semester’s Print Exchange.

The sign-up sheet will be posted on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19th, in the front entry way.

There are only 21 spaces available. First come-first serve.

The rule is, of course – once you sign up, you must participate. No backing out, no willy-nilly excuses… You’re in.  So commit and have fun! These always turn out for the best.

The theme is Messages.
The deadline will be Early April.

If a Dolphin Press internship interests you, but you are saving your application for the spring semester, you can apply now for a spring internship. The deadline for early spring applications is next Friday, the 25th of September at 5:00pm. You will still be able to apply for a spring internship at the beginning of next semester, but be aware that positions may already be filled by that time.

If you missed the deadline for fall applications you can still apply, because we will be accepting applications for fall internships along with early spring applications. Same deadline applies. The Enoch Pratt free Library is hosting a contest called Un(bound): An Altered Books Competition.

It is their first ever Altered Books Competition, and the deadline is September 26th (no exceptions!).

From their flier: “An “altered book” is any book, old or new, that has been recycled by creative means into a work of art.”

Nolen Strals from Post Typography (a 2002 MICA grad who spent most of his 4 years in the Printmaking Studio)

Dolphin Press & Print is a unique collaborative print studio that is designed to bring visual artists and writers together to work with students, producing limited-edition letterpressed books, broadsides and editioned prints in a variety of print media.

The Dolphin Press Internship Program provides MICA students with curricula-based professional development skills and allows students to interact with one another and with the Visiting Artist Programming connected with the press.

Working collaboratively with peers and seasoned professional printers, solving complex problems and administering business and marketing duties at the press are the primary focus of this internship.

The internship program is administered by Co Directors Whitney Sherman, Chair of the Illustration Department and Gail Deery, Chair of the Printmaking Department at MICA.

Interns will report weekly to the Dolphin Press Coordinator and the Paper Studio Coordinator.

Applications are now being accepted for the Fall 2009 Semester. Four positions are available. Each student will receive three credits and is expected to work 8 hours per week.

Applicants will electronically submit their completed applications with a cover letter, resume and class schedule by 5:00pm on Monday, September 14, 2009 to printmaking@mica.edu. Applicants may then be interviewed.

The Olde Towne Arts Center (OTAC) in Slidell, Louisiana presents a call for entries for TOPOPHILIA (love of place), a national juried exhibit of Artists’ Books. Open to artists living or working within the USA. Submissions must be one-of-a-kind or a limited edition based on the exhibition theme. It may be an artists’ book structure, fine press work, fine binding, sculptural book, or a book object. All accepted work must be prepared for installation. This exhibit is about places that are near to our heart – rural or urban, public or private, internal or external, microscopic or macroscopic, singular or plural, real or imaginary, past or present. The exhibit is open to all interpretations on the theme. The juror and curator is Natasha Lovelace Habers, Assistant Professor of Art, at Kennesaw State University in Georgia. Entries must be postmarked by January 31, 2009, for March 13 – April 13, 2009 exhibition period. Since 1977, Charles Ritchie has recorded images and notes in a series of sketchbook/journals that now number 131 books. These volumes have become both settings for intimate watercolor studies improvised from subjects in and around his home, and dream repositories written in a pen and ink note hand that only the artist can fully decipher. The sketches and texts inform a broad program of small-size drawings created serially and independent of the books. In addition, Ritchie’s drawings and journals are the sources for his intaglio prints that engage the techniques and materials of printmaking to reinvent his images. The artist’s lecture at MICA will be based loosely around 30 years of work seen concurrently in his solo exhibition, From the Inside Looking Out, which will be on view at Gallery Joe in Philadelphia from November 1 through December 20. 

In honor of his visit we are having a 2-hour show of student sketchbooks.
Bring your sketchbooks/journals directly to the talk at the BBOX. We will have tables set up in the BBOX for the books. It’s a great chance to see the variety of journals students keep. After Charles Ritchie speaks about his own work – there will be a discussion surrounding the student books.

PRESSING SOUTH is an upcoming exhibition of letterpress printing from the southeastern United States. The exhibit, co-sponsored by UNC Wilmington’s Department of Art & Art History and the UNCW Publishing Lab, is an excellent opportunity for all practicing letterpress artists in this region to showcase their work. The Print Center is a nonprofit gallery whose mission is to support printmaking and photography as vital contemporary arts and encourage the appreciation of the printed image in all its forms.

The College Book Art Association supports and promotes academic book art education by fostering the development of its practice, teaching, scholarship, and criticism. As part of this mission, the CBAA is offering awards for two outstanding student books. The finalists’ entries will be judged and, as space permits, exhibited at the CBAA bi-annual conference, January 10–11, 2009 at the Center for the Book at the University of Iowa. The first biennial conference of the College Book Art Association seeks to bridge the worlds of book art, book history, cultural criticism, and curatorial work through appreciation of the book as an aesthetic sensorium. Scholarship, artistic practice, and the digital age have evoked for us the multimedia nature of the book experience. At a time when the book arts have never been more vital, ART, FACT, AND ARTIFACT builds from these energies and will offer presentations, papers, studio demonstrations, and exhibits from artists and scholars interested in the future, present, and past of the book as an expressive form.
