Pyramid Atlantic Art Center again sponsors “Paper, Print and Book” led by artist Lynn Sures in conjunction with Giorgio Pellegrini of the Museum of Paper and Watermark, Fabriano, Italy. The course will offer students two weeks of intensive study at the Museum with time to enjoy the beautiful Marche region. Find out all the details on Monday and bring your lunch.

This semester’s Open Paper Studio will begin on Sunday, February 5th.  The hours have changed this semester, and will now be from 2pm-7pm.

Remember, only those students who have taken the paper-making class or those that have spoken with Gail for permission may work during open studio.  For those who plan to attend, please contact Eleni Giorgos (egiorgos@mica.edu) at least one week before you plan to attend open studio to coordinate and prepare the fiber that you will be working with. There will be no beater operation during open studio time.

Please remember that there is a $20 lab fee for those students interested in working in the studio and using the available supplies (within reason) throughout the ENTIRE semester.  Otherwise you may be asked to purchase your own materials for an individual project. This money must be given to Eleni before you can begin working in the studio.

The group will travel to the ICA, view the exhibition and attend an artist talk.

Theaster Gates is speaking at MICA!

His lecture, entitled My Labor is My Protest / Artist Agency in the Re-Creation of Space, will explore his work in “cultural development”-the arts-based revitalization of under-resourced neighborhoods. Gates uses sculpture, performance art, installations and urban interventions to explore ways in which artists and cultural producers can be proactively involved in community renewal, particularly in poor, black, urban neighborhoods.

Spanish artists María Jesús González and Patricia Gómez are creating large-scale prints, photographs and related videos during their artist residency at the decommissioned Holmesburg Prison in Northeast Philadelphia. This historic prison was built in 1896 following the widely replicated wheel and spoke plan designed by John Haviland for the Eastern State Penitentiary in 1829. It was in use for nearly a century, finally closing its doors in 1995. The artists’ prints are a physical archive of the prison cells—including paint, drawings and markings left by the inmates who lived there.

The exhibition Let’s C highlights recent, prominent sculptural and performative works by Chicago-based artist Nick Cave, who is currently in residence at The Fabric Workshop and Museum (FWM). The exhibition features Cave’s iconic “Soundsuits”—which function in chorus as dance costumes, sculptures, and extensions of one’s persona—video of recent performance, and, for the first time, Architectural Forest: an ambitious, floor-to-ceiling installation of ornamented bamboo. This forest serves as a playful yet mysterious landscape in which Cave’s December 16th performance at FWM takes place. For over two decades, Nick Cave has constructed Soundsuits out of a litany of unique, found materials, such as crocheted hats, plastic sandwich bags, gleaming buttons, stuffed animals, and other items from thrift stores, flea markets, and estate sales. Their sculptural form functions simultaneously to display and conceal through the visual references to the exuberance of masquerade and the protection of body armor.

Zoe Strauss: Ten Years is a mid-career retrospective of the acclaimed photographer’s work and the first critical assessment of her ten-year project to exhibit her photographs annually in a space beneath a section of Interstate-95 (I-95) in South Philadelphia. Strauss’s subjects are broad but her primary focus is on working-class experience, including the most disenfranchised people and places. Her photographs offer a poignant, troubling portrait of contemporary America.

Meeting Minutes: Jan 24, 2011

-We touched briefly on the building schedule. Still 7AM – 2AM, and then longer at midterms and finals.

-Building floor codes have changed (blue doors on each floor). Ask your faculty if you don’t know what it is. These doors are now being locked.

-Please log into our email client to update your settings. This allows us to target groups of you individually if necessary (by year, by major, concentration, etc.) PLEASE – DO IT!

-We introduced the SVA Reps again. They are Dino Urpi (Sr.’s) Chloe Maratta (Jr.’s) and Shelby Rosoff (Soph.’s). Feel free to contact them to represent you at SVA meetings, or feel free to attend them yourself.

-Printer Hours are back! Currently we have 2 nights open.

-Ventilation has been updated in the Acid Room, installed in the Letterpress Room and is coming soon to the Screenprint Washout room. The new washout sink is finally almost here.

Upcoming Events:

Linotype: The Film is coming to MICA on Friday, Feb 10th. It will be screening in Falvey Hall at 7 PM and it is free! The only remaining seats are for students with MICA ID. Please be in line early to ensure your seat. All ticketed but unfilled seats will also be opened up to students and the general public 10 minutes before screening.

Gomez & Gonzales are (were) on campus on Jan. 31st. There’s a Philly field trip this coming Sunday, Feb 5 to see their work and other pieces in Philagrafika 2012.

Trenton Doyle Hancock will be on campus February 19-21 working on 2 pieces for the 2012 BMA Print Fair. Globe Interns and anyone very interested in participating should email dolphinpress@mica.edu.

Artist Irina Nakova will be on campus for a Noon lecture and critiques on March 5th.

The 2012 Southern Graphics Conference is in New Orleans this year – it is happening during MICA’s Spring Break, March 14-17. The MICA Printmaking Dept. is not formally participating in it this year, but any students interested in attending should ABSOLUTELY look into it. These are always fun and a great way to connect to artists, printers, and other schools both personally and professionally.

Artist Daniel Arsham, Printmaking’s Mixed Media Speaker Series artist will be on campus for a 7 PM Lecture and critiques on March 26th.

Master engraver and RISD faculty Andrew Raftery is coming to MICA. Dates and details on this will be published as soon as we know.

The BMA Print Fair is happening April 28th and 29th. Like every year, they are seeking student helpers. If you’re interested in this (and spaces are limited), contact us and we can put you in touch with them.

The Printeresting.org crew (including our own Robert Tillman) will be lecturing on Sunday, April 29th at the BMA Print Fair.

MICA Merit-based scholarships for the 2012-2013 Academic Year are due by TODAY, Feb. 1! (holy moly!) SUBMIT HERE!

A discussion was started about grade inflation within MICA and the Printmaking Dept. This will be an ongoing discussion.

Spanish artists Patricia Gómez and María Jesús González have a collaborative practice grounded in art conservation. Utilizing a modified version of a technique known as strappo, they work primarily to preserve the surfaces of buildings–the veritable “skin of architecture”–by detaching a wall’s paint with glues and fabric and transferring that surface paint, in its entirety, to a new canvas. During a recent 6-week residency in Philadelphia, they worked at the abandoned Holmesburg Prison before its demolishion, creating large-format “printings” of drawings, paintings and graffiti left by former inmates on the walls. An exhibition that will include this large-scale monoprint will be presented at The Galleries at Moore College of Art & Design in January 2012.

Here is what you need to know about cleaning out drawers and lockers for the break.

-IF YOU ARE A MAJOR RETURNING TO MICA IN THE SPRING you may keep your drawers in the shop.

-IF YOU ARE A SENIOR MAJOR WITH DRAWERS ON THE 1st & 2nd FLOORS, please move their contents to your studios’ drawers.

-IF YOU ARE A CONCENTRATOR RETURNING TO CLASSES IN THE SPRING, you may keep your drawers in the shop.

EVERYONE ELSE, people in classes but not Majors or Concentrators, you must empty your drawers and lockers.

DRAWERS AND LOCKERS MUST BE CLEANED OUT BY FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16TH AT 8 PM.

SILKSCREENS MUST BE TAKEN HOME unless you’re a Major or Concentrator. You may bring them back in the Spring if you need to. Please note – this is the week when the MOST screens are stolen. Be vigilant and lock it up, then take it home!

Shop access will end on Friday December 16th at 8 PM.

The shop is closed for the duration of the winter break. We’ll see you all in the New Year!
