There’s a book release / signing TONIGHT by Jay Ryan of The Bird Machine at Atomic Pop in Hampden, with his new book Animals and Objects In and Out of Water. Here is Atomic Book/Pop’s write up on the book.

Jay Ryan is a very prolific poster artist, with working dating back a decade+ + +.

Also of note, Paul Hornschemeier is releasing his new graphic novel All and Sundry.

The book signings kick off at 7.

Boy, if you missed out on the NYC IFPDA and E/AB Print Fairs this weekend, you really missed out. The weather was fantastic, the crowds were easily managed, the print work was far reaching, numerous, and completely accessible.  I genuinely hope you made it up.

Our friends at Printeresting, who had their own event this weekend, wrote up a really fabulous review of the two fairs – and rather than me repeating them, I’ll just send you there.

Laurie Snyder has arranged for a free bus for 20 students to the Pyramid Atlantic Book Arts Fair this Nov. 8th. 

FURTHERMORE: she has arranged a discount admission for those students at $10.  Sign up in the Silkscreen hallway, 2nd floor Dolphin.

Printed Matter’s annual fair of contemporary art books, art catalogs, artists’ books, art periodicals, and ‘zines offered for sale by over 120 international publishers, booksellers, and antiquarian dealers. Admission to the fair is FREE.

New York Print Week is coming up at the end of this month, October 27-November 2. It is a must see. The week centers around the IFPDA Print Fair and the EAB Fair starting on Friday, October 31. This is a  week-long series of lectures, exhibitions, demonstrations, gallery talks and openings focused on printmaking and its vitality as an artistic practice through the ages. These events allow art collectors, artists, scholars, educators, and the public to connect with IFPDA member galleries, museums and non-profit organizations. In addition to participating in the art community, attendees will discover new projects, enrich and refresh their knowledge of fine prints, and expand or begin their own collections. EFA invites you to come and experience the work of over 65 leading contemporary artists representing a diverse range of practices including painting, sculpture, printmaking, works on paper, photography, installation, video and new media. 

Please join us as we celebrate 10 years of EFA Studios as a catalyst for growth in creative communities, locally and globally. EFA Studios is a competitive studio program that offers subsidized studio space and other forms of support for its members. 

EFA Studios is a program of The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts and is supported in part with public funds from the New York Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts, The Carnegie Corporation Inc., Materials for the Arts, and many generous individuals. 

The Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, a program of The Elizabeth Foundation, will also be open to the public during this time.

Stamps and Beyond: Design and Process

Michael Bartalos will discuss his experiences and influences in regards to stamp design and novel project opportunities and their process. He will also share valuable marketing and personal promotion strategies useful to design and illustration students.

Mr. Bartalos will also be talking about his design for the Latin Jazz stamp at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum’s Latin Jazz Celebration on Saturday, October 4th. The Latin Jazz event features live jazz music, conga drum demonstrations, and stamp collecting. The Postal Museum is located directly across the street from Union Station on Metro’s Red Line. The celebration is presented by the Postal Museum and Smithsonian Jazz Appreciation Month Initiatives. Find out more.

While at the Postal Museum, check out the Alphabetilately exhibit opening Friday September 26. Concept sketches and unused versions of Bartalos’ Latin Jazz stamp design will be included in this wide survey of philatelic history and graphics. It’s shaping up to be an amazing show thanks to the efforts of San Francisco friends Michael Osborne and Alyson Kuhn.

In partnership with the Visual Arts Program of Montgomery College, Takoma Park/Silver Spring, Pyramid Atlantic is pleased to present the 10th Biennial Book Arts Fair & Conference, the event connecting international artists and booksellers to collectors and scholars of the book arts through a dynamic book fair, stimulating conference lectures, exhibitions, panel discussions and events. Pyramid Atlantic, in its 27th year, serves as a contemporary visual arts center and gallery dedicated to the creation and appreciation of paper, prints, book arts and digital media.

Laurie Snyder has reserved a bus to take 25 students to the Book Arts Fair on Saturday, Nov. 8.  The cost will be $10. This is a special rate for just these 25 students, as the standard daily rate for just the show is $20.

There will be a sign-up sheet in Dolphin on November 1st. First come first serve.
