-We introduced the SVA Reps again. They are Dino Urpi (Sr.’s) Chloe Maratta (Jr.’s) and Shelby Rosoff (Soph.’s). Feel free to contact them to represent you at SVA meetings, or feel free to attend them yourself.

-Printer Hours are back! Currently we have 2 nights open.

Wed 4-7 PM

We will be adding more soon, please be patient as we figure out the schedule.

-Ventilation has been updated in the Acid Room, installed in the Letterpress Room and is coming soon to the Screenprint Washout room. The new washout sink is finally almost here.

Upcoming Events:

Linotype: The Film is coming to MICA on Friday, Feb 10th. It will be screening in Falvey Hall at 7 PM and it is free! The only remaining seats are for students with MICA ID. Please be in line early to ensure your seat. All ticketed but unfilled seats will also be opened up to students and the general public 10 minutes before screening.

Gomez & Gonzales are (were) on campus on Jan. 31st. There’s a Philly field trip this coming Sunday, Feb 5 to see their work and other pieces in Philagrafika 2012.

Trenton Doyle Hancock will be on campus February 19-21 working on 2 pieces for the 2012 BMA Print Fair. Globe Interns and anyone very interested in participating should email dolphinpress@mica.edu.

Artist Irina Nakova will be on campus for a Noon lecture and critiques on March 5th.

The 2012 Southern Graphics Conference is in New Orleans this year – it is happening during MICA’s Spring Break, March 14-17. The MICA Printmaking Dept. is not formally participating in it this year, but any students interested in attending should ABSOLUTELY look into it. These are always fun and a great way to connect to artists, printers, and other schools both personally and professionally.

Artist Daniel Arsham, Printmaking’s Mixed Media Speaker Series artist will be on campus for a 7 PM Lecture and critiques on March 26th.

Master engraver and RISD faculty Andrew Raftery is coming to MICA. Dates and details on this will be published as soon as we know.

The BMA Print Fair is happening April 28th and 29th. Like every year, they are seeking student helpers. If you’re interested in this (and spaces are limited), contact us and we can put you in touch with them.

The Printeresting.org crew (including our own Robert Tillman) will be lecturing on Sunday, April 29th at the BMA Print Fair.

MICA Merit-based scholarships for the 2012-2013 Academic Year are due by TODAY, Feb. 1! (holy moly!) SUBMIT HERE!

A discussion was started about grade inflation within MICA and the Printmaking Dept. This will be an ongoing discussion.

That’s it! The next meeting will be Tuesday, March 6th at 3:15. Mark your calendar now.

Meeting Minutes, IFPDA trip

Department,Meetings — KVH @ 3:20 pm, Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

A brief set of minutes from the IFPDA Trip Meeting on 10/12:

-Applications for the Paper exhibition were due by Monday, Oct 17th.

-Job offerings for 2D prototyping were offered up. I believe the positions have been filled.

-NOTES ON FACILITIES:

  • New solvent cans – for use with all oily / inky paper waste.
  • Please be considerate and clean all your tools after use: ink guns, ink knives, etc.
  • Building hours over fall break: CLOSING AT 11PM FRIDAY -MONDAY (old news now).
  • Buy Neoprene gloves: available at Bell Hardware in all sizes. These are the heavy Bluettes. They’re the best in terms of safety.

-Juniors and Seniors – please send all your artwork documentation and images to Robert Tillman: rtillman@mica.edu.

The weekend of November 5th is the PRINT FAIR in NYC. The major locations for the weekends events are:

-IFPDA: International Fine Print Dealers Association (uptown)
-E/AB: Editions/Artists Books Fair (downtown)
-There’s a very very good lecture on Saturday afternoon you should try to attend: “Print/out” Christophe Cherix and Faye Hirsch
-Full list of participants and affiliated exhibits is on the above websites.

We also discussed the department reimbursing students for travel expenses to this event:
Reimbursement: Must go to Fair with group on Saturday November 5
All Senior Majors who go, and first ten Junior Majors will get $30 for travel and the department will pay admission to the fair ($10)

We must pre-book tickets and reserve seats for the lecture

MUST CONFIRM TODAY OR EMAIL EVA BY MONDAY AT 5 PM ewylie@mica.edu

Registration for reimbursement is over; no new students will be allowed to register. Students who have already registered for reimbursement must attend the IFPDA Fair at 1:00 PM on Saturday November 5, and will be required to provide documentation of their attendance.

*NOTE* Even though the department bus tickets and fair tickets are sold out, you are still encouraged to attend! The IFPDA Print Fair is a very fun event and a great reason to visit NYC (on what is usually a very nice time of the year). We recommend BOLT BUS for tickets. Stay with a friend!

There is no need to travel on Saturday specifically, just show up at the appointed times that day if you want to tour with Robert and Eva.

More specific details will follow. The general schedule for Saturday’s tours will be the E/AB fair in the morning (11:30AM) and then the IFPDA Fair in the afternoon (1PM). The “Print/out” lecture starts at 2PM.  If you want to attend this lecture, you MUST reserve your seat here.

Meet and Greet -

Our Class Representatives are Kim Michalak (Seniors), Nate Cubeta (Juniors), and Jess Condon (Sophomores).

Ingrid Schindall is our new SVA Rep. Please direct any SVA-worthy questions or concerns her direction.

We talked about our new Ventilation. MICA has approved a major overhaul of our 1st fl. ventilation – We are working with designers, builders, and our faculty to find the most efficient and effective restructuring of Etching. This will happen in Summer 2011.

We just added DATES TO REMEMBER on the right-hand side of this webpage. Look! ➜ ➜ ➜ ➜ ➜ ➜ ➜

The Senior Thesis group is overseeing our spring dept. exhibition, curating and managing the show completely. Kim Michalak is managing the project, and details will be coming soon about this.

Colin Benjamin, the Grad Tech Assistant for Printmaking has changed his hours to Wednesday / Thursday 3 – 5 PM, and Fridays 10 – 4 PM.

Printer hours have changed. They are listed on the Dept. Hours page. Misha Capecchi and Zach Storm are both printing for us this semester. UPDATE: Printer film prices have changed as well. They are $1 per foot of silkscreen, and $2 per 6″ of litho film (I misspoke in the meeting. This is the actual price.)

We discussed future plans in the department, especially in regards to a new all-digital course we would like to offer and coming changes to Junior Seminar.

Q&A

Handed out pending Drawers for Majors and Concentrators.

Thanks to everyone who attended.

Changes in the Department, and Meeting Minutes

Campus,Facilities,Faculty,Meetings,Resources — KVH @ 2:51 pm, Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

After the engaging conversation that took place at the department meeting yesterday, you will be pleased to know that the building hours will remain the same unless we are directed by MICA Operations.

The faculty invites you to help make decisions on ways that we can better distribute our resources in the department. In the next department meeting, we can include a short discussion of your ideas and suggestions.

Please help to adopt the new procedures that we have laid out for studio practice and lead the way to a healthier safer studio practice. Below are some of the new procedures.

-Gail Deery

Departmental Meeting Minutes:

We covered the following points in the Meeting yesterday:

The Bathrooms have been rehabbed… New sinks/toilets, repaired walls, floors, repainted. People spent a lot of time working on this, please take care of it.

We talked at length about the department Going Green.  We need to cut back on wasted materials, make the shop a healthier environment, and still keep everyone happy and productive in the shop.

Bullet points included:

- Safer cleaning materials for tabletops / palettes (vinegar, vegetable oil).  You will find more bottles of Vegetable Oil present, and far fewer bottles of solvent (Gamsol, Denatured Alcohol).

-Recycling all scrap and mis-printed rag paper (arches, rives) for the paper studio

-Conserving electricity when possible

-Orange-scrub soap will no longer be available – Lava Bar soap will be available at every sink. (we forgot to mention this in the meeting).  The bookstore also sells small bottles of Pumice Soap that will fit in your drawer if you so desire.

-Our crummy blotters are being replaced with a new system using Pellons and Bounty paper towels, as was demonstrated by Gail.  If you prefer, you may use your own bath towels, but they must be taken home when you are finished.  Any left behind will be thrown away, no questions asked.

-the shop used its entire YEAR’S supply of newsprint last semester. Unfortunately you must now purchase your own pads and keep them in your drawers.

Finally, there was MUCH discussion over attempting to limit shop access for safety and energy – conservation reasons.  After much consideration, we’ve decided NOT to limit hours this semester (see Gail’s letter above).

If you haven’t yet signed up for our mailing list, please do so on the lower-right side of this page.
